EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

NORTH CANTERBURY REMITS. At a meeting of the North Canterbury Educational Institute on Saturday last, it- was decided that the following should be the remits for the annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute to be held in Auckland in January:—■■ 1. That an average of 500 be the maximum size of schools throughout the dominion. 2. That in the interests of the education of girls, no changes bo made in the needlework syllabus until schools are equipped for a more practical teaching in the subject, and sewing classes are limited to twenty-five pupils per adult teacher as in other classes lor technical woi'k. ; 3. That the Education Department be requested to draw up a code of instructions for securing proper sanitary conditions in schools, and the Institute recommends that a scheme should bo issued to Boards of Education and school committees recommending rules that might be followed in the cleaning of schools on hygienic principles. 4. That special schools should be provided in the large centres for the education of .sub-normal-children. 5. That organising teachers should he appointed in schools of grades 0, 1 and 2, and that the same be under the direction of the inspectors. .

6. That the executive urge upon the Minister the necessity of formulating, in conjunction with the proposed increase of salaries, a dominion scheme of sick pay on ; lines similar to those in other branches of the Government Service. . ■ • . ■

7.' That the Institute ask the Government to put on the Estimates a special annual grant in order that schools may be supplied with proper heating apparatus. . '■ • >
