ANGLERS' NEW YEAR.
SEASON OPENS TO-DAY. _ The fishing season for trout will open in South Canterbury to-day* In that' optimistic spirit which characterises most anglers, worthy of the name, just before the opening of the season, it is 6tated this year—as it is every year—that the rivers are teeming with fish, and that sport is sure to be . good. Predictions by fishermen have been known on occasion to fail to square with the facts thay afterwards turned out, and it remains to be seen what the pre. sent season may have in store for those whose delight it is to spend their time with the rod, on the river' bant. , One thing may be said with Ksertaioty however, namely, that the rivers are in good order. It is safe to sav that all the trout streams in South Canterbury will be whipped to-day. A good many anglers left town yesterday for the* different rivers, and many others were regretting their inability to do so. Some there are who do not- care to go out on the first of the season, considering that the trout'are not sufficiently up in,con. dition. by Ocrfcpbef 1, but the great majority of fishermen find it impossible to check their ardour in such a degree as to cause them to remain at home on what to them is the most important dav of the whole year. Local 'knglers will be pleased to know that the Government have Gazetted the local regulations made by the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, and that no limit is to be placed on the weight of fish taken on any one day.
