FAREWELL SOCIAL. A very pleasant evening was snt.nl iii the Orion schoolroom on I'Yid.iy last, when a large and representative authoring of friends assembled to bid fare-I well to Mr and .Mrs Brooldaud, ami family, who are retiring from 'their I farm to take up their residence in Temuka. The .schoolroom hail been i tastefully decorated, and arranged as a drawing-room, and presented a very < cosy and inviting appearance. Va.ii-j ous parlour games were indulged in ' until rfoven o'clock, when tea. ;.id iefreshments were dispensed in- the ladies. After supper, Mr Shaw add''\-;scd the company ami spoke in glowing terms of. the esteem in which the JSroukland family aro held, and of the Sonera 1 regret felt at their loss from Ihe district. • As chairman of the school committee, ho thanked Mr and Mrs jjiookland for the generous support rhev had always given to the. school. The Miwe.s Brook I and, too, would bo greatly it is-s----ed, as they had always taken an' ; elice interest in church and school •. latloors. and their help in organising eo'.cmts ; a.ntl social l'uuctiotis could not be ovor-l estimated. Mr Shaw concluded bv wishing Mr and Mrs- Brookland and! family health and happiness m their I new home. Mi- Abbot said he had known Mr Brookland since Jio (Mr Abbot) was a! hoy in the. Old Country, and bad always found him a straightforward ei.-d! conscientious man, ami a true friend. Ho had had ample opportunirv of improving his acquaintance with the I Brookland family as he had lived tear them for somo years in the j'areoni district, and also at Rangitata. antl lie could not wish for better neighbours. He wished them long life ie 7 o;noy their retirement. Messrs Norrish and Green endorsed all that had been said by previous speakers.
Mr Brookland replied on behalf of himself antl family. They had been taken completely by surprise, and he thanked those present for :be honour done to them, antl for their kind expressions i,|' friend-ship. AVh.it he had done for the school, lie would continue to do, anil in conclusion, he offered two prize-; to be competed for by ilie ( Hon and Rangitata schools respectively, for the best essays on ".sheep'—fro-.i the lamb to the wool and mutton export. -Messrs Shaw and Abbot thaa\ed Mr Brookland. in behalf of their :espe.-live I committees for his uenerous oiler, which they gladly accepted. . The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing, musical items' being | supplied at intervals by Mis-es ZSorrish j and Townshend, and 'Messrs Gavson I and L. and I*. Hill and Mrs -'haw '< ontri billed a recitation, Messrs ■{. rod jL. Donnithorne supplied good dance music, and Mr Green carried o,it the -duties of 3f.C. The singing of "Auld Lang Pyre.'' brought to a close, a most .-.-■i'iv.ablo gathering.
