SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

_; © ~ TIMARU SOUTH. The monthly meeting of the Timnru South School 'Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs G. J. Sealev (chairman), J. A. Hay, .I I '. Hathawav, N. N. Brown, J. Boothroyd, E. Irwin) W. Hawkey. W. Ellis, and the secretary, Mr A. Eraser. The chairman stated that the chief business would be the making of arrangements for the annual year-end functions, as outlined in the headmasters report before the committee that evening? They would require to appoint, judges for the writing., drawing, sewing prize competitions as usual. The following' were unanimously elected judges:—-Mr J. j-lardeastk: fwritingl. .Misses Mcflroy and Holdgate (sewing), and iVlr \V. Greene (drawing). It was decided that Mr Sealev should, present the prizes on break-up day. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for the past month was 414. It had been lowered considerably by measles, which were, still prevalent. The roll number was 477, and the highest attendance -li-i, each constituting a school record. Miss Campbell's place was filled by Mr J. L. Monziof:. for the infar.t school break-up Miss Fyfe proposed to hold a picnic in the Park on the 'Wednesday afternoon, December 18th. The proposal would require the sanction of the eoniiuitteo. as the co-operation and help of the parents would be desirable. There were 191 pupils in the infant room to be provided for on break-up day. Seven pupils sat for ihe recent junior scholarship and free place examinations, unfortunately several taking the . epidemic at th<' examination. The sixth .standard examinations would take place on the 9th inst. AYindowpanes were required and a reminder v, as given that some parents had net redeemed their promises to Ihe playground fund, for which £1 8s had been received. —"I lie report was adopted. The date for the annual break-up was fixed for the IDth inst. According lo the conditions under which the grant- for free paper and bonks for standards o and 0 was mad;; this year, school committees were to pay half the cost- of the paper, but the Board has decided to allow the committee extra grants for incidentals, equal to their shares of cost of paper, iitstead of making a deduction from tiie grant. A letter was received from the- janitor of the school. J Irs Stevens, asking for an increase in wages.—lt was decided that owing to the unsatisfactory way in which the cleaning of the school had been done to give her a month's notice. The matter of appointing a successor to Miss Campbell is to be dealt with at a special meeting, when the applications, which are to be called for a caretaker, will also be considered. Accounts amounting to .CI 3.s 6d were passed for payment.
