The by-election for the Bow and Bromley seat caused by Mr Lansbury resigning to contest the seat on the women's suffrage question, resulted as follows:—Blair (Unionist) 4042, Lansbury 3191. Tho suffragettes actively campaigned for Mr Lansbury, but tho contest was not confined to tho franchise question. Aggrieved workers complained of the Insurance Act and Mr Lansbury suggested it should bo repealed. Many Liberals and Labourites abstained from voting. After the lids -were secured with iron bands and sealed, the gold was taken iu.vans to St. Katherino's dock and placed on a steamer for Bremen. Pctween Bremen and Trieste there were j four changes of trains. When, received ! at Alexandria the contents of two cases ! rattled, and Lloyds' agent was called. \ Ho opened these cases and found lead j of exactly equivalent weight to the | gold missing. Tho police believe the j theft took place between Bremen and ' Trieste, when in charge, of the Ger- I man postal authorities. Frequent i changes of railway, guards facilitate j thefts.
