Mr Pitcaithly, headmaster cf the Waiinate Public School, who has been ill for the past ten days, was yesterday removed to Mrs Henderson's private hospital, to undergo an operation for appendicitis. Mr A. G. Hebden, ledger-keeper at tho Union Bank of at Waimate, leaves there to-day on transfer to Cliristchurch. Captain Woods, lato of the s.s. Storm, and previously for many years in tEe employ of Union Company, died at Wanganui on Sunday. At tho meeting of the Board of Education yesterday the resignation of Mr R. Neville Hawkey master of the St. Andrews School, was received on account of ill-health. At a political garden party at Feilding on Monday. Mr D. H. Guthrie, M.P., received an illuminated address and purse of sovereigns. Mr Massey and other members of Parliament were present. Mr C. Hewsen, who has been employed by the Waitaugi Iron Works, Waimato, for the past 18 years, and is now leaving to set up in business at Studholmo, was presented by his fellow workers with a case of pipes as a parting gift. At the afternoon service of the Primitivo Methodist Church at Gapea Valley last Sunday, tho Rev. G. H. Mann, on behalf of the congregation, presented a very handsome Oxford Teacher's Bible to Mr Harvey Mann, who he said, had rendered groat service to the church and district, rs superintendant of the Sunday School. The presentation v.*as made in view of the fact that Mr and Mrs Mann are leaving tho district shortly, for a new home near Timaru. Mrs Bargfredo, widow of t-h* late .John Bargfrede, passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning at her home in Elizabeth Street, axt-er a cumparat'vely Short illness. }lrs Bar&sfredo was one ox the pioneers- of this country, and her "unselfish life, lived almost entirely for others, earned for her many warm friends who will regret the decease of one who set so good an example in the dispensation of kindness without thought of reward.
