COMPLIMENTING SIR JAMES CARROLL. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. Sir James Carroll was tendered a complimentary social to-night, the occasion being his 54th birthday. Ho received an address, accompanied by 4675 signatures (this number will bo made up to 7500). Sir James was the recipient of encomiums from several public men, and in reply he said that words failed to express what he felt on receiving Raich expressions of goodwill. It required all the fortitude _he possessed to refrain from exhibiting weakness whilst listening to the expressions of goodwill ho had heard from his friends that night. " 1 will never," ho concluded, " forfeit your esteem and regard."

THE TAIERI ELECTORATE. DCNEDIN, Au K . 21. ,A meeting was held ut Mosgiel.tonight to consider tlie abolition of the Taieri electorate. After a discussion it was decided to urge tho member for the electorate, Hon. T. Mackenzie, to endeavour to have legislation enacted providing that tho South Island representation should remain as formerly, and that the North Island have representation on the same population basis. A committee was formed to draw up a petition to Parliament on the matter. An objection will also be forwarded to the Boundary Commissioners.
