Elworthy wore a mole satin costume, large silver grey hat, with sweeping emerald mount; lira \V. Bond, stone grey coat and skirt, black hat with shaded roses: Mrs H. Ehvorthy, prunelle costume with small velvet toque to match; Mrs P. E. Ehvorthy, Falac costume trimmed with black military braid, large black hat covered with black plumes; Mrs George Rhodes (Meadowbank), mauve costume, black and white toque, with Parma violets, handsome furs; Mrs H. Orbcll, pale pink cloth costume, large black hat; Mrs Hope, navy blue serge braided with black, black hat; Mrs Maurice Harjier, navy blue coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs C. E. Thomas, green tailor-made costume, trimmed . with velvet, green toque with bead oriental trimming and sweeping green mount, handsome black furs; Mrs E. J. LeOren, bright navy costume, with Eastern embroidery, big black hat. black furs; Mrs Egcrtou Read, long purple satin skirt, long black satin coat, big black hat and sables; Mrs Cartwright, navy tailored costume, with tan facings, large biscuitcoloured hat with mount and Oriental trimming; Mrs Arber, brown tweed coat and skirt, hat to match; Mrs Melville Jamieson, dark blue cloth, black hat; 'Miss E. Studholme, grey corduroy velvet, black hat with wlu'te ostrich feathers; Miss Hope, coat .and skirt of pale blue cloth faced with black, black hat; Miss Rhodes, old rose frock, trimmed with satin and !aoe, large black hat with white aigrette, stole and muff of sable; Miss Brodrick, grey costume trimmed with cream, large black hat; Miss M. Brodrick, grey frock, large black hat with roses, Miss Lyons, cream costume, handsomely braided and trimmed .with a'touch of reseda silk, black hat with large pink rose, and sweeping grass; Miss Talbot, mole velvet costume, French bat of tusoan and saxe trimmed with pink roses; Miss O'Brien, saxe costume, tuscan hat with black lace and saxe satin; Miss rjsherwood, smart black and white coat and skirt, trinimed with blue military braid, cerise hat with large black mount; Miss Orbell, blue coat and slrirt, saxe blue hat. . * At the Hunt Club ball that evening Mrs E. Studholme wore lemoncoloured 6a.tin veiled in pale grey chiffon, with oxidised silver embroidery; Mrs M. Jamieson, black tulle over pale bine satin; Mrs"A. Elworthy, lovely gown of mauve satin, with overdress of moonlight blue trimmed with jewelled embroidery; • Mrs Bond, princesso goivii of vieux rose satin, veiled in embroidered net of the same colour; Mrs H. Elworthy, charming costume of apricot satin with overdress of apricot ninon, gold fringe; Mrs P, Elworthy, cerise satin, veiled in ninon of the same shade, deep silk fringe to match; Miss Rhodes, pale blue satin with tunic of grev ninon; Miss Hope, pale blue eatin; Miss Raine, rose pink embroidered satin dress.

Last Monday Mrs A. Grant, Wai-iti road gave an afternoon tea for her guest Miss . Barron (Dunedin). The hostess, received her guests, wearing a handsome black glace costume, with embroidered insertion on the bodice; Mrs Wigley wore a heliotrooe coat and skirt, hat to match; Mrs" Burns, tweed coat and skirt, black hat; Miss Barron, pretty pale grey costume: Miss Knubley, grey coat and sk'irtj becoming black and white hat: Miss Buchanan, dark red cloth Russian eoat and Bkirt, braided with black, beaver hat; Miss Lysaght (Hawera), ereen coat and skirt, green beaver hat; Miss Gladstone-Robinson, green tweed coat and skirt, tweed hat white furs; Miss Shand, grey costume" black hat, black fur stole and muff; Miss Miles, blue coat and skirt, bin- black hat; Miss Sterndale. heliotrope crepo" line, big black hat. Others present were:—Mrs Webb, Mrs Finch, MNs Marchant, Miss McGeorge Miss White Miss Kempthorne, Miss Gibbs, Miss Hart and Miss Bruco. Captain and Mr Temple (Geraldine), have bought Mr Marchant's house on the Wni-iti Road, the latter has taken one of Mr Mundell's houses in Trafalgar Street. Mr and Mrs Kirublev returned ou Thursday from a delightful, though very short trip to the north. Miss Raine, who has been staying with Mrs Strachey, Christchurch, is expected in Timaru to-day. Mrs Tripp, senr., is the guest of her daughter, Mis Hope. Mr Tonkin is on a fortnight's visit to his uncle, Mr Sanderson, North Canterbury. Doctor Cox.and Master Douglas Cox left on Friday for a short holiday in the north. Mr and Mrs Francis Barker have arrived in.Auckland, and are returnin.r to liuiaru about the first week in September. ,n lT \ u anl }. ihss Huston-Ciirlott (Christchureh), are staying at Beverley. Mr McCaUum, of the s.s. Wuirtina. and Mrs McOallum, were also there for a few days this week. Mrs Wilfrid Rutherford, with her children, and M'iss Parkinson, who have been at Beverley, left by motor tor Waihaorunga on Sunday. " Mrs and Miss" Ostler, of Wellington, who are we]] known in Timaru, have returned from a three years' trip round the world, and are at present the guests of Mrs Ostler's daughter, I *on, Closeacre, Le^in. Airs lercv Barker, with her small son. and Miss Sealy, leave to-day for -Ivalcaliu, after spending a. few weeks with her mother, Mrs Sealv, Southerndown. A team of lady golfers from Christchurch arrived in Timaru yesterday, to play against a local team this morning. Among them were Mrs Hill, }J; S Alan Campbell, Miss Trolove, Miss N. Public tha.nks are due to Mr Arber, the enthusiastic secretary of the Navy League, for arranging such a delightful evening. In the afternoon, u great number of ladies met at the Stafford Tea Rooms, where Mr Mihier snoke on the same subject, and p „t the objects of the Society, plainly and forcibly before"!™ hearers. Mr Milner was tho guest of Mr and Mrs J. W. White, Grasmere, and returns to Oamaru by tuo second express to-day. Mr and Mrs Egerton Reid leave next Tuesday for Wellington, where they join tho Rualiiuo, sailing for England on Thursday. ..Dr. Bowo returns to New Zealand by the Athenic, which leaves Homo the first week in September. The South Canterbury Savage Club give a ladies evening next Wednesday in the Assembly Booms, and judging by the.very inviting programme, tho audience may anticipate "a feast ol reason, and a flow of soul."

The Country Girl: Miss McMillan, Highland Lass. At the U'ashdykr Hall last Friday, a plain and fancy dress ball was held. The night being very dirty did not keep, many away who hud decided to attend. Dancing was kept going till an early hour in the morning, and everyone enjoyed themselves. The Grand March was led off by Miss H. James, and Mr L. King (convenor). Those in. fancy dress were:—Miss Harriet James, Fairy: Miss Rennic. Jackson, Spanish Dancer; Miss' Ellie Cooper, Red, White and Blue; Miss Eddie Cooper, Fairy: Misa Emma King, Good Luck; Miss Phemia King, Irish Colleen. Miss Lottie King, Scotch Lass; Miss ■ Florie Timlych, Britannia; Messrs W. Ross. Chinaman; G. Chapman, Baker; F. Watson, American Cowboy; W. Goobe, Old Nick; F. Williams, Bushranger: F! King, Burnt Cork' Comedian ; Fielding, Huntsman ; L. King. Workman; and several others; The prizes were won by Miss Emma King and Mr Will Ross, who were ■greatly cheered. Mr L. King made the presentations, and thanked all who came to make the fancy dress ball the best for a long-time. Tho music was supplied bv Mr f-ock Williams' Band, and tho dance, passed off without a hitch.
