THE NAVY LEAGUE.
Some months ago we ventured the opinion in these columns that nothing else would so much assist the Navy League in Timaru as ttio formation of a Ladies' Branch. When ladies become members of an organisation of, this kind they are seldom satisfied, like too many men, to be merely nominal members; they are nearly always eager to be doing useful work, and in thiw case there is a good deal of useful [ work which they can do, and no one else can do so well. We ore glad to note, therefore, that a Ladies' Branch of the Timaru League was formed yesterday whose large initial membership is the strongest indication of the interest that is already taken in this wisely patriotic movement. Apart from this imuortant new development the League was never before in such a healthy state as it is now in Timaru. Its membership has increased greatly in the past few months, branches have been formed nt all the schools, and first-class educational work is being done by tho distribution of literature referring to the Navy and lectures like the admirable address which Mr Miluer, M.A., delivered last night. We have no doubt that the formation of a Ladies' Branch will quicken the activity of the whole League, and the preparations which the League is now making to emphasise a patriotic lesson and consolidate its funds , for future work by the special celebration of Trafalgar Day on \ October 21st deserve to be rel warded by complete success.
