PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr W. M. Hamilton agreed yesterday to act as one of the managers of tlio Waimate Technical Classes. Among the Timaru residents who have gone to the Gabriel's Gully Jubilee celebrations is one whose namo was omitted from the list previously given. This is Mr Richard McQuire, of James Street, who is a pioneer of '6l, I'ung Liang Hwang/ Chinese Consul in New Zealand, wlio recently took up the duties of Consul-General in Australia temporarily, has received notification of his permanent appointment to the latter position. Mr Claude Haigh, wlio arrived in Wellington the other day in advance of the Scarlet Troubadous, is an old Timaru boy who will shortly visit his native town after an absence of twenty years. Mr Haigh's father was at one time in business here as a photographer, and members of the family were prominent in musical circles, Miss Kate Haigh being a well-known vocalist and amateur actress. ' It was largely in order to find more scope for their musical talents . that the family removed to Melbourne.
The many friends of Mr and l Mrs . 13. . Craig, formerly of this town, will be pleased to hear of their success while competing at the spring meeting of the Cannes (South of France) Gol'i Club. Mrs Craig won the Grand Duke Michael of Russia- gold enamel teaservice, worth £'so, and Mr Craig, the grand duke's gold cigarette case, of like value. It is the first time 011 record that husband and wife have carried off these' celebrated prizes at one meeting, for which there are inanv competitors. The Cannes Golf Club is the most celebrated club on the Continent. The late King, as Prince 01 ft'ales, in addition to cdvmg prizes, often presented them winners, which ceremony is now performed bv the Grand Duke Michaef of Russia'. The previous week Mr Wildin« won the- tennis championship of the south of France on the celebrated courts of the Hotel Beau site, Cannes.
