SPEECH AT WAIAU. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, who was welcomed at a large social gathering at Waiau last night, said he had 110 sympathy with the cry that Ministers were too much in the country and too little ; in Wellington. Mr Mackenzie said that tho apple industry was going to be a most important one 211 this country, and when markets were found in the Motherland, suitl waste lands brought into use, .the apple raising industry would become a valuable asset. He wont on tr) review meat prospects throughout the world, and spoke very hopefully of "the prospects of the. wool trade. What the country required was men and money, and to hare its spaces peopled. Great Britain had a surplus of population and capital. and both Australia and New Zealand should have a much larger proportion -of that surplus. The time was coining \yheii the burden of Empire would rest nioro heavily on the Dominion's shoulders.
