CONTINUOUS TELEPHONES. "We are glad to note tliat the importance of obtaining a continuous telephone service for Timaru is recognised by the Mayor, who iwill bring up the matter at a committee meeting of the Borough Council to-night. There is no doubt that ATr Craigie is right in his opinion that it is very little use merely to post circulars to telephone subscribers, asking them to express their approval of the continuous service. Business men, in particular, have so many 'circulars addressed to them in a iWeefc that half of them are forgotten as soon as they are received, and the personal canvass which ihe Mayor suggests will be a much more satisfactory way of Sealing* with the matter. The statements which we publish in another column show that the Department is quite Teady to introduce this very necessary improvement on the request of a mere majority of subscribers, and that it will not necessarily be putting any. money in its own pocket by the change. We cannot think that many telephone subscribers wish to sacrifice the up-to-Idate reputation of their town, and to limit the efficiency of its fire prevention system and the hours in_which prompt . medical attendance can bo obtained, for such a paltry consideration as £1 a year-
