Prince Leopold of Bnttenburg, who has been ill f or some time in Sydney, is rapiclly recovering. His trouble was hemorrhage of tho throat. His Lordship Bishop Verdon, of JJunedin, and Archdeacon Maekay, of Uamaru, arrived in Timaru on Monday, aiid are tho guests of Father Tubman at the Priory. The flag at Dalgoty and Co.'s offices was flown at half-mast yesterday on account of the death at' Clu-istc'hurch ot Mr F. A. Archer, who had been for thirteen years manager for the firm in that city. Acting-Major W. H. Among South Canterbury teachers who sat for the recent examinations, two received "special mention"— Isabella M. Iverach and Mary A. Moyle, both for Latin. A meeting is to be ■ held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Friday afternoon at 3, to make a presentation to Mr Gillespie, ex-constablo arid clerk of the court. All ' subscribers are invited to be present. Regret was expressed by the chairman and others at last evening's meeting of the Timaru Gas Company that Mr S. F. Smithson had found it necessary to retire from the board on account of his forthcoming visit to tho Old Mr Evans said that ii Smitlison had proved himself an excellent director, and they were very sorry to lose his services. At tlio Christchurch Police Station yesterday afternoon Sub-Inspector MoGrath, on behalf of the membera of the force in Canterbury presented ex-In-spector Gillies with a Chesterfield suite, Mrs Gillies wth a diamond brooch, and Miss Newsome (Inspector Gillies' niece) with a diamond bracelet. Inspector Kiely, Chief Detective Bishop, Sergeant Bird, Sergeant McLennan, and Constable Koster .spoke in appreciation of Mr Gillies' servces, and Mr Gillies suitably acknowledged the gfts.' Mr W. D. Charteris, who has resigned from the clerical staff of 'tis" O.F.C.A. owing to ill-health, was met last evening in the board-room by a number of employees. Mr A. Wilson occupied the chair, and expressed regret that such an energetic and obliging member of the staff as Mr Charteris should have to relinquish his post on account of iH-health. On behalf of the members, ho presented Mr Cimrteris with a handsome pocket-book and fountain pen, and wished him a very' speedy return to health. Messrs J. R. Lack, G. Granger, A. F. Boys, and T. Anderson, endorsed the remarks of Mr Wilson, and all expressed great regret at Mr Charteris leaving the firm. The recipient thanked all for their kind expressions of goodwill to him, and for their valuable present.
