VALUATIONS IN TIMARU
A STRIKING COMPARISON. BIG INCREASE. At tho special meeting of th» Borough Council last night the Mayo* read some interesting comparisons 00» tween the valuations xn Timani in 1901 and 1911. The figures had boon taken out by tho Town Clerk, and wore aa follows:—In 1!)01 tho unimproved valuo of tho Borough was £188,212, and the improvements wcro £1)51,447, a total of £539,659. In 1911 tho figures in tho some order wore:—-£1,119,34G--£949,205, total £2,068,651. In roply to Councillor Raymond, the Mayor said tho last sot of figures included Greater Timaru. Councillor Raymond: Then it is not a fair comparison. Continuing, tho Mavor «nid tho annual value, that is the rating value, was £48.309 in 1901, and £132,031 in 1911. The old area £107,060 nnd the new area £25,071. The rateable properties in 1901 numbered 1820. and In 1011 thov totalled 3ff.11, including the new area. Tho population in 1901 wan 6424. and in 5911 it was 12,180. Tho number of dwellings in 1901 was 1203. mid in 1911 it wn s 2437. Tho total buildings for 1911 was 2827. there, being 627 dwellings :n the new area.. Councillor Anglaml enquired how much the Council had bon-owod smeo 1901. and the Mayor said £IOO,OOO, hut ha felt confident in stating that not a Councillor, nor a ratopaver would rescind, if ho oould, anything thoy had done. ___________
