THE UPPER PAREORA BRIDGE.
To tho Editor of tho "Tiniaru Herald" Sir,—After reading tho correspondence that has appended in your columns from well-known farmers in tho Lime. stone Downs and Motukuika distriot» on tho bridge question, words can hardly express tho disgust some of us must feel when reading in your report ol tho lgßt mooting of tho Waimate County Council tho opinions expressed by some of those present on tiua most important matter. It has boon clearly pointed out by your correspondents, o.nd their statements, I may say, are absolutely oorrect, that Mr Winter's petition did not represent tho settlers in the Limestone Downs and Motukaika districts, and yet we find tho county engineer saying, by way of supporting his clioioo of tlio Ciinnington Cliff sito, tliat a bridge thoro would suit the bulk of the set. tiers, a statement that is wholly fallacious and quito unwarrantable. Councillor Walker's opposition to a bridge on tho main road crossing was much tho same as tho engineer's, and merely resolved itself into tho olioice of it site where the expenditure Would be tho smallest, without reference to the requirements of the surrounding districts, of which ho was wholly iguowut, being a stronger in the land. Mr Walker gave tho space at Martin's crossing as 460 ft., no doubt the engineer's measurement, for his own purpose, and I would suggest that thoy inspect the training walls protecting some of Mr Marchant's bridges, costing about £0 per chain, before thoy make such a statement again. Why the Council should claim tho Government grant for this Cliff sito when it was undoubledly procured for a brklgo on tho main road at Martin's crossing, is n matter wo will leave for tho present.—l am, ote., ANOTHER SETTLER..
