Messrs K. and L. Stackhouse, of Onopungn, North Canterbury, who have been touring tho southern lakes, aro spending a few days in Timaru with their sister Mrs Arthur Shirtcliffe.
Mr J. P. Kalaiighcr, formerly headmaster of tile Winchester School., left Timaru by the first north-bound express yesterday, accompanied by his wife and family. Ho takes up his new duties as agricultural instructor for tlio Auckland province next month.
Tho Hon. Dr Fhidlay, who is at present on a visit to Mt. Cook, told a reporter that he did not wish to say anything on tho subject of a general rumour to the effect that he will be a candidate for a North Island constituency at the next general election.
W. Trembath, the well-known runner who competed in the recent Timaru Caledonian sports, proposes leaving New Zealand for England on April 10th, and will be accompanied by McLachian. Holway will be one of the party as far as Sydney, whence he will travel to America. Holway has arranged to meet Trembath and McLachlan in London in June.
Miss Harriet Starkisß, head mistress of the Normal School, Christchurch, died on Sunday. She hud been over twenty yeans m the service of the North Canterbury Education Board. His Excellency the Governor visited Mataura yesterday and. was shown over the paper mills. He comes north by the second express to-day, en route to Mount Cook.
Mr Leo D. Chateau, New Zealand representative of Messrs Clarke and Meynell, is now in Timaxu making arrangements for the appearance hero on the 25th hist, of the George Willougby Company in the farcical comedy "The Night of the Party."
