PERSONAL ITEMS.
The following members of the Timaru branch of the St. John Ambulance have passed their third year examination, gaming the highest certicates given by the Association, Messrs J P. Hughson (special credit), H. W. Arc-her, W. J. Harris, J. Hall, all with credit; J. Dennison, T. R. Harris, W. Mintron, J. Johnson, R. R. Graham, G. Shelly, M. F. Commons, E. Hunter and A. G. Foster. Pr Gabites was the instructor for the class; the examiner was Dr Thomas, who said that he is well satisfied with tlie knowledge of the men.
Mr Geo. Petersen, advance manager for Wirth Bros., and a brother of Mr Rudolph Petersen, Timaru manager for Fullers', arrived at the Bluff on Sunday mid will be up this way in & day or two.
A London cable reports the death of Jem Mace, the well-known pugilist, of stnile decay. Jem Mace toured Ne.f Zealand, -after his defeat by King, and gave an exhibition of his skill in Timaru. Duncan Gillanders. one of the eldest pastoralists in Southland, died suddenly on AVednesdaj, aged SI. Another prominent Soutlilander, Mr J. A. Mitchell, auctioneer, died yesterday aged 63.
