VICTORIAN RACES. DERBY DAY. A RECORD CROWD. Press Associttion-BT Ttltgrapn-Oeprrigbt Received 6.30 p.m. Oct. B9th. MELBOURNE, Oct. 29. The Melbourne Cup meeting of the Victoria Racing Club drew the biggest crowd to Melbourne ever known, consequently it was not surprising that although the weather was unpromising the attendance did not suffer. Rain fell during the night, and continued until morning, but cleared before noon. The races were run in fine though cloudy and sunless weather. There was a groat crowd present, including ! visitors from all parts of the Continent, among them Lord Dudley, GovernorGeneral, Admiral Bosanquet, Governor | iof South Australia, Admiral Poore, ' j and their suites, and all the principal : society people. There was a great disj play of dressing. The racing proved good, and the Held for the Derby was the largest known, though the race was not wildly exciting. Results:— MAIDEX PLATE, of 300 sovs; 1 mile. —Blue Gem 1, Aurate 2, Bowhill •'i. Eleven runners. Won easily by three lengths, four lengths separating second and third. Time, linin 42isee. MARIBYRXOXG PLATE, a sweepstake of 25 sovs each, Ift., with 1500 added; for two-year-olds; 5 furlongs. Pliilio 1, Popinjay 2, Woolerina 3. Souchong and Sweet Malt were scratched. Elvanite and Calidor were first off. When the field settled down Woolerina took charge from Philio, Calidor, Twa. Brigs, Popinjay, and Elvanite. Later on Philio fell back a little, but was always in a good place in the centre of the field. At the three furlong post Woolerina led from Popinjay and Flaith. Popinjay led at the distance, but Philio came through and won by a length and a half, four lengths separating second and third. Time, lmin 3sec. HOTHAM HAXDICAP, of 300 sovs; H mile.—Flavian 7-1 1, Call Boy 7-9 2, Somnambulist 6-7 3. The others to start were Kerlie, Matour'ee, Conge d'Eslire, Mutilation, Langloh, Carl Dour, Flavins, Prizefighter, Iliad, Moorilhi, Optimism, Vivacious. Kerlie, Flavian, and Langloh were first awav' but round the back Optimism led by half a length from Vivacious, Prizefighter, Kerlie, Langloh, Matouree, and Call Boy. Round the turn Optimism, Vivacious and Prizefighter were together. Vivacious and Langloh fell. It was a fine exciting finish, won by a neck, a length and a half between second and third. Time, 2min 352 sec. VICTORIA DERBY, of 25 sovs each, with 2000 sovs added; lj mile. Beverage (Pike) 1 Styria (Smith) 2 Bobadea (McLachlan) , 3 I Danaus was scratched. I

Desert Rose was the first, to show out from a good start, and led round the river by two lengths. Beverage, St. Wyne, Indiscreet, Styria, Lager, Golden Point, Bobadea, and Tanami followed in that order. At the abattoirs the first division consisted of Desert Hose, leading by two lengths, Lager and Beverage. Then, three lengths back-, came Bobadea, Styria, Indiscreet, St. Wyne, Golden Point, Hart fell and Tanami. Styria moved up to fourth place at the sheds, five lengths separating the next division, led by Golden Point. Beverage led into the straight from Styria, Lager, and Desert Rose. At the distance Bobadea took third place, and they finished in this order, with three-quarters ol a length between first and second, and four lengths between second and third. Time, 2min 37} sec. Hartfell finished fourth, then Lager, Desert Hose, Golden Point, Indiscreet, Tanami, and St. Wvne.

MELBOURNE STAKES, of 1000 sovs; 1J mile.—Son of the Marsh 1, Artillerie 2, Trafalgar 3. Other starters were Alawa. Ftavinius, Parsee, Maltine, Comedy King, and Danaus. Son of the Marsh led from start to finish. At the mile he -was three lengths out from Maltine, Danaus, Alawa, Trafalgar, and Comedy King, with Artillerie last. Son of the Marsh increased his lead to four lengths passing the abattoirs, and led into the straight, where Maltine rapidly fell away, Artillerie and Trafalgar both coming fast. The English horse won by three lengths, half a length separating second and third. Time, '2min 7sseo. Parsee was fourth, then Alawa, Comedy King, Danaus and Flavinius, with Maltine a 1 ad last.
