SYDNEY, Oct. 27 At the Lord Mayor's dinner to Gaptain Scott, Mr Samuel Hordern notified a donation of £2500 to the expedition funds. He asked that it be kept- secret until the Commonwealth Government had arrived at a decision regarding the request for a similar sum. CAPTAIN SCOTT IN WELLINGTON. Per Press Association. "WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. There was a large gathering at the civic reception to Captain Scott this afternoon. Speeches of welcome and good wishes were aeiierered by the Mayor (Mr T. M. Wilford) and the Premier. Captain Scott, in replying, feelingly referred to the kindness received from New Zealanders. Captain Scott delivered a lecture tonight which was appreciated by a large audience. THE GERMAN EXPEDITION. Captain Scott says that Dr Brace's expedition cannot reach the Antarctic tili next year. The doctor has a difficulty in raising funds, and it is quite on the cards that he may not succeed. Jhe German expedition also will not reach the Antarctic- till next year. Notwithstanding «-hat has been announced ot its modest aims and intentions to restrict itself to purely exploratory and scientmc objects. Captain Scott has ■litt e doubt that the German party really means to try for the Pole. SHE HAS ROUGHED IT. The Terra- Nova is the same old whaler which carried relief to the Discovery expedition in-1903. She was built at Dundee in ISSI. and is regarddec! as the largest and strongest of the okl Scottish w.halers. She is 187 ft in length. aiJtt in beam—loft longer, and but 2!.U- narrower than the Discovery. She was quite a famous ship m die Greenland trade, but on account of the dechne of whaling during the ] a =t lew years, she has generally Wwcd in sealing out of St. John's, 'Newfoundland. In 1903 the Admiralty purchased the Terra Nova for the relet ol the Discovery. After returning to England she was sold by the Admiralty, and in 1905 she " was desoatc.hed in relief of the American Ziegle- expedition, which had been nit oft by an exceptionally severe winter in I'rauz Josef Land. The, relief exile- j dition sent cut in 1904 had been driven hack, and Mr Fiala and his I men, who had lost their own shir, the ™ ,m! ™ ra ' 'T- re " l rather a bad" pass.
