THE RAILAGE OF FISH.
STATEMENT BY MR CRAIG lE. | | Interviewed by a 'Herald" representative, Mr James Craigie, M.P., saul that he had done his best. "to induce the Minister of Railways to allow '.liuiaru iish to be railed to Ghristchurch by the second express, but Mr Millar declined to jfiye way. However ho (Mr Craigie) intended to press the mattor again. Regarding the suggestion that a night goods tram should be run from Ashburton to Christ-church (winch would suit the Timaru fish trade) the Department said there was not goods traffic enough to make the train pay. The suggestion had been made and fully considered before. One objection to granting the request of the fishermen was that if this was granted there would be numerous other requests of a similar kind. Last year for instance, . the Minister refused to carry straw- ; berries trom Waimate by the mail | trains, and this year he had refused to • carry fruit from Auckland by the ex- ! press service. The whole system of j rapid mail and passenger services I would be broken down by granting such concessions.
