NORTH END PARK.
A further meeting of those interested in obtaining a recreation reserve for the north end of the town was held in the Waimataitai School last light, Mr !>■. H. Bowie presiding. The object of T-li© meeting was to appoint a committee to confer with the committee appointed by the Borough Council, to discuss the whole subject. Mr Bowie said they would nil be pleased to see from the newspapers that the Borough Council was in sympathy with the p-oposal, and had taken it up earnestly in a businesslike way. The general idea seemed to be that a recreation ground should bo procured, and that it should bi« paid for per the medium of a loan extending over a number of years, with a sinking fund which would automatically repay it. He had seen the De-puty-Mayor (Mr Hawkey) who had promised to advise him as to the date on which the committee set up bv the Council would meet the north end'committee. Mr Bowie said he had also seen Mr Craigie, M.P., who had promised to do all he could to assist the movement, at the same time pointing out that a good deal of money was now being spent annually on public reserves in Timaru If the Native Reserve were obtained, commercial value would have to he paid for it. Mr Bowie added that it' the present chance of obtaining a suitable ground were missed, it might be lost for all time.
A general discussion followed in which it was stated that Mr j. \V. AVhite's "Grasmere" estate had been definitely withdrawn from sale. Mr F. L. Wallace, who lias just returned from a tour of the North Island, mentioned that he had been struck on his travels with the liberal way in which North Island towns were provided with brea.tlung spaces. The policy was a good one, and if they did not secure a piece of ground at the north end of Thnaru now, it would be a much more costly thing to do so later on. The opinion was also expressed that if they obtained a reserve, a fail* amount of revenue could be derived from it by making a charge for admission on 14 or 15 days a. year, when important, fixtures were being held in it. The following deputation was appointed to meet the committee set up by the Borough Council: —Messrs R. H. Bowie. E. J. Penrose. D. Byers, A. Bell, AY. Thomas, V. Parker, pud Dl N. K. Cox.
