RICHMOND DISASTER ENQUIRY.

At the Richmond disaster enquiry, Melville, the driver of the Elsfcernwiek train, said that after leaving South Yarra he aiid the fireman watched foe the advanced starter signal. When they readied it it was lowered. Approaching Richmond they saw the fog aignalman. He appeared to be waving a green flag. He reduced tb» speed of the train to nine miles and then saw the end of the previous train Tery close. He could not see the home signal. Ha applied the brakes, but was too late. The claims for injuries total 483. The railway receipts show a falling off. This is supposed to be due i« nervousness a"nd lack of confidence.
