TIMARU HARBOUR BOARD.

THE ELECTION FOR PAREORA. The following is the result of the election for a member to represent the Pareora district on the Tuna.ru Harbour Board in places of Mr Bas ley resigned :

Majority for Mr McKcown 64. On the result of the election being announced at St.Andrews Mr Henderson (the defeated candidate) called for three cheers for Mr MeKeown, and these were heartily given. -In responding M r MoKeown thanked the electors for putting him at the head of the poll, and lie had also to thank Mr Henderson for coming forward to contest the election, as he eonsidero:! that it was only right that the electors should show by their votes that they had confidence in the member. In an uncontested election it might hanpen that the member elected was the nominee of a very small section of the community and in such an important body as the Timnru Harbour Board that would not be a dei sirable state of things. He consider- j (d the Harbour Board, the most im- | ! iKirtant local body in South Canteri bury. ' as the success of the farming : industry to a great extent depended j jon the harbour. He assured the rate- ; payers be would do his utmost to de- ] I servo the confidence they had reposed jin him. His opponent," Mr Header- , i son, had contested the election in a < ! f'riendlv manner and he was certain • that the result of the noil had been I to a great extent brought about bv j the fact that he himself had boon ; considernlWy longer resident in the ; district than Mr Henderson, who had received a majority of the votes in : the district, where ho was best known, , viz. F.-k Valley. I Mr Henderson said be was certain j that the electors had done the right i thrncr in choosing Mr Mfdveown.. who : -would make an admirable reiires-n- ---' tat ire of the farming community. He j was n man whom everyone of them j eonld look no to. and was moreover : well able to he'd his own in anv ; debate wlreh_ might occur at tlie ; board's meetings. j The candidates then shook hands j and cheers were again giv"u for both I Mr Henderson and Mr McTveoTrn.
