His brother went to luV' assistance; both were drowned. TWO NATIVES DROWNED. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, • Nov. 15. ' News from To Araroa states 1 that on Saturday morning three natives went out in a, boat fishing. They attempted to return about three in the afternoon; and when halfway home the-boat capsized. The three occupants' liiing on for somo time, when first one named Tirapira Hami dropped and was drowned. The boat still .drifted before the wind in tho direction of Horeora, and sooud a second .man named Wirepu Tapinani dropped off, : Vivicl was seen ho more. The boa-fc' still continued drifting with the third-man, Puliaka Kohere, and ho managed.; to get a piece of planking and' proceeded; to swim. After some time 'ho safely reached the shore at Arupua in an exhausted condition. An oil launch left yesterday morning to make- all .possible search for the bodies," but the quest was unsecccssful. ■'■;■; .
FALL INTO A RIVER. BLENHEIM, Nor. 15. A den tit by drowning'occurred in the Opawa River this morning. Mrs Brown, wife of Jns. Brown, a l>oo£maker. went, out, accompanied by an adopted daughter, a child of about four years, for the purnosp of catching whitebait. Suddenly slip disappeared to the bottom of the river. The'child, ran-to the house of a neighbour, who, with assistance recovered the bndy. * doctor was summoned, but found life extinct. Mrs Brown complained this morning of not: feeling well. RUN DOWN BY MOTOR. TOLICE VAN COLLAPSES. . CHRISTCHURCH, Nov! 15. Iris Marion Jackson, 8 years of age, was knocked down . by. Dr:: Sandstein's motor car to-night and somewhat severely injured. While- the police van was conveying a. load of prisoners from the Supreme Court to the. railway station to-night a wheel collapsed and the, occupants were thrown out. One prisoner, George Allan, received severe injuries to his head and hack, and was taken to the hospital in a semi-conscious condition. SUICIDE AT WAIMATE. A man named Robert Hyland Smith committed suicide at Waimatp, on Saturday night, by cutting with a razor, the head beirtgine'ariy severed. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon before Mr .T. Sinclair, J.P., acting-coroner, and a jury of six. After hearing the evidence of Mrs Owen, Dr. Hayes, and Constable McClincby, the jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane.
