TIMARU CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE The most meritorious performance in the road race was certainly that of A. Birch, who rode the world's best bicvcle —the Superb Swift. A Birch started from Timaru three minutes before J Arnst, and arrived at Plumpton Park close behind Arnst, covering the distance, 112 miles, in 6 hours 37 minutes 25 2-5 seconds, equalling nearly 17 miles per hour. The public know that some irregularities occurred in connection with the pacing of J. Arnst, who was awarded the fastest-time prize. Rule 6 of the road reads: —"Any competitor accepting pace from any person other than contestants will be disqualified. The League awarded A. Birch the second fastest-time prize, and we now leave it to the public to say whether he was not entitled to the fastesttime prize and the Blue Ribbon, considering that J. Arnst was paced by his brother after the latter had retired from the race and was no longer a contestant, having been earned some distance in a motor-car. The League of New Zealand "Wheelmen,. by their decision and entirely ignoring their rules, have now approved of motorcars being used in the Tiinaru-Christ-church. race to pick up tired contestants with their bicycles, who could be dropped when refreshed to continue tor The rank and file, numbennj nea'rlv one hundred and fifty, of course had no motor-cars specially employed wind, making the best of the pace provided bv their fast-tiring comrades, each ana all bravely struggling without outside aid to w.n one of the coveted prize*., and «wcially that tor thefastest time.
