CANTERBURY Y. TIMARU. Taking advantage of the. return of the Canterbury players to their homos, after their victorious journey south to . play the animal ma ten Canterbury,- v; Otago, the Timaru Club had the pleasure yesterday of taking part in some of the'best games ever witnessed on the Elizabeth street courts. The weather was all that could be wished,' and as a result, play was very enjoyable. The visitors were, of course, rather too strong for the local players; but it can-truly he said that the cimrt(>sy of the Canterbury team in breaking tlieir journey hero will be very long appreciated,' and that the play shown, will result in an improvement of form of local enthusiasts. With the exception of Wilding and Ollivier, Canterbury's best were playing, and they wort all their games except one—the combined double 'in which Miss C. Hay and F. Cameron, scored a meritorious win from Mrs Ballantyne and Kivor. The. win was chieflv clue to steady and well placed plav 'by Miss Hay, varied occasionally by"a hot return by Cameron, and to the fact that Kivcr was taking risks that did not please his fair partner. It was regrettable that more singles were not plaved. Miss Goodman by well placed shots and a determination to go far everything liml an easy win, and Mrs Berry well deserved her short margin victory from Miss Hay, after both had played themselves almost to a standstill. Goss played a great game against Pearse, the veteran making few mistakes, and deadly smashing anything that was at all get-at-able ion his fine forehand. In the doubles Canterbury' did well, and all the combined games wore..productive of excellent tennis.
