TMARU CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE The most meritorious performance in the road race was certainly that of A. Uiuli, who rode the world's best bicycle —the Superb Swift. A Birch started from Tiniarn three minutes before J. Arnst, and arrived at Plumptou Park close behind Arnst, covering the distance, 112 miles, in t> hours 37 minutes 25 2-5 seconds, equalling nearly 17 miles per hour. The public know that somo irregularities occurred in connection with the pacing of J. Arnst; who was awarded the fastest-time prize. Rulo 6 of the road reads: —"Any competitor accepting- pace from any person other thau contestants will be disqualified." The League awarded A. Birch the second fastest-time prize, and we now leave it to the public to say whether he was not entitled to the fastesttime prize and the Blue Ribbon, considering that J. Arnst was paced by his brother after the latter had retired from the race and was no longer a contestant, having been carried some distance in a motor-car. The League of New Zealand Wheelmen, by their decision and entirely ignoring their rules, have now approved of m6torcars being used in the Timaru-Christ-church race to pick up tired contestants with their bicycles, who could be .dropped when refreshed to continue pacin"- anv specially-favoured competitor ° The rank and file, numbering nea'rlv one hundred and fifty, of course had no motor-cars specially employed to i-arrv pacers, and had, therefore, to against the strong easterly wind, making the best of the pace provided bv their fast-tiring comrades, each anil all bravely struggling without outside aid to win one- of the ceveted prizes., and esneoially that for / the fastest tHio.
