A syndicate has secured a portion of the site of - -Hordern's. old Palace Emporium for the purpose of building the largest- theatre in Australia, and .one of 'the finest in the world. BALLARAT BAND CONTEST. MELBOURNE, Oct. 25. Twenty thousand persons were present -at the finals of the Australian' band championships at Ballarat. The City and Prahran Bands tied for the championship prize of 200 guineas. HOSPITAL SUNDAY. The Hospital Sunday collections yesterday amounted to £7372, beating the previous year by £3OO. UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE. The Minister of Customs is securing expert opinions on the question of an unemployment insurance scheme. The secretary of the Oddfellows' organisation considers that the scheme is feasible and suggests a contribution of Gd weekly or a penny each day a man works. Received midnight, Oct. 25th. DENTAL CONFERENCE. All the States and New Zealand are represented at the Dental Conference. In liis inaugural address, the president stated that 93 per cent, of the children of America, 85 per cent, of New Zetland, and 94 of the Metropolitan district of Sydney, had bad teeth. REQUEST FOR DISSOLUTION. HOBART, Oct, 25. Mr Earle has asked for a dissolution.
The Governor will give an answer today.
