ARREST OF HUMPHREYS

CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER

CH.RISTCHTJRCH, Oct. 24. As an outcome of the accident to the motor car driven by W. A Humphreys on Labour Day when returning from the volunteer manoeuvres at Yaldhurst, the driver was this morning arrested at New Brighton by Chief Detective Bishop and Detective J. Kennedy on a charge of manslaiighter as a result of the accident by which Captain W. 0. Pavitt of the Civil Service Rifles, lost his life. The arrest was effected about 11 o'clock at New Brighton, where Humphreys was camping with some friends. „«■ Humphreys was brought before Mr Bailey, S.M., later in the day, ."and formally charged as follows: —"That, on 13th October, 1909, at Christolmrch he did by neglect and improper driving of a motor car cause'the death of .one William Ostell Pavitt, and did there-: by commit the crime of manslaughTh'e object of bringing accused .before the Magistrate was, that bail might be fixed, and his Worship accordingly fixed bail as follows: Accused in £2OO and one surety of - £4oo t ßail was forthcoming, accused's father (Mr G. Humphreys) being accepted ns surety and accused was released. He will be brought before tlie'Court tomorrow morning, when a further remand will be asked for. ; .

With regard to the military'enquiry into the accident it is understood that the local defence have not vet received instructions from quarters to hold such an inquiry. .
