Port Darwin and Eastern files contain details of a typhoon at Foochow on September lothi It was the worst for 40 years, and came without warning. . Terrible damage was done both ashore and afloat. Forty per cent, of the native craft were destroyed, including BO cargo boats. The Chinese cruiser Haichai parted her cables, drifted on to the rocks, and was considerably damaged. Twenty of the crew jumped overboard in a panic and were drowned. The river was full of dead bodies and wreckage. It is estimated that the total loss of life was 2000. A typhoon at Formosa on September 14th devastated the northern part ! of the island. One hundred and twelve native vessels were wrecked. Sixteen hundred buildings were destroyed, and many lives were lost. A second cyclone occurred on September 18th in the northern central districts. The Tamusi river overflowed, and hundreds of buildings were blown down or washed away. A great number of people were drowned or crushed to death. Railways were seriously damaged, and the cable line with Foochow was destroyed.
