BARNARDO'S CHILDREN.

GARDEN CITY FOR ORPHANS. "Founder's Day" at Dr .Barnardo'j. Homes was celebrated afc the Girls' Garden. City of Barldngside, in Sssex, in perfect summer weath'er. On the invitation of Lord and Lady Brassey and the council of-the Homes, a numerous company assembled in the grounds, and a delightful ■ performance of music and games by the children "•as carried through. The Duke and Duchess of Somerset attended the function, and her .ladyship gave, a bright and sympathetic speech at the public meeting in t-h£ afternoon, and afterwards opened a new cottage named the Eleanor " Plood," after an American lady who defrayed the cost. At noon there was a service in" the children's church, when brief addresses were given by the Rev. H. S. Sanders, Rector of Woodford, and the Rev. AY. Fuller Gooeh. At the meeting in the marquee, the speakers, besides the. Duchess of Somerset, were the Rev. Prependary Webb-Peploe, the Rev. Dinsdale T. Young, and Mr William .Baker, honorary director of the Homes.

The subsequent programme included dancing round the maypole on the village green by the boys and girls, a display of naval drill by little handymen from the Watts Naval School attached to the Homes, an exhibition of handicrafts bv the boys, and a display of cookery by the girls. Maoris danced on the village green and sports and contests followed. . One of the most interesting features of the day was the march past of a company 'A sturdy boys and girls who are going out to Canada as emigrants. Prebendary Webb-Peploe addressed these youngsters in a few encouraging words, and said that there was no institution which was contributing more to the stability of the British interests ' in Canada than Barnardo's Homes. Towards the close of the day a representative company of the children decorated with flowers the memorial to Dr Barnardo which has been erected on the village green.
