ONLY THREE WOMEN SAVED. GALLANT BLUEJACKETS. i'coss Association-By Telegraph-Copyright MONTE VIDEO, August 25. Only three women were, saved irom tlio Columbia after her collision with the Schleisen. Seven of the rescued died after being landed. The bluejackets from the cruiser Amethyst displayed great gallantry, rescuing many in the ship's boats. ON THE ROCKS. STEAMER BEACHED. Received 0.30 'p.m., August 26th. BRISBANE, August 26. The steamer Waipara, bound to London via Sydney, struck a rock near Moreton at midnight, and was beached. Tlio crew and passengers landed safely. The bottom of the. ship is evidently badly damaged, and the three holds arc full of water. The weather was bad. GALE AND HEAVY RAIN. IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCEReceived 12.30 a.m., August 27tli. BRISBANE, August 26. , There was a south-east gale, with heavy ruin, when the Waipara struckRockets were fired and the pilot boat immediately came to the steamer's assistance. Water commenced pouring into the second and fourth holds, necessitating beaching to prevent lier sinking. The steamers Palmer and Maranoa have been despatched to lighter the cargo of the Waipara, which includes 4000 bales of wool, 700 tons of tallow, 1200 tons of frozen meat, and 250 tons of copper. Pilot Matte left the Waipara before the accident. BARQUE ABANDONED. BOAT REACHES LAND. TWELVE PERSONS ADRIFT. Received 1.15 a.m., August 27th. FREMANTLE, August 26. The lighthouse keeper at- Cape Naturalist reported this forenoon that a boat had within two miles, containing several men.' Subsequently a- tug, picked up the boat and towed it to Bunburv. The boat proved to be from the French barque Gael, from London to Hobart, which was abandoned on Monday last, 200 miles off Cape Lcewin, in a sinking condition. The boat contained the" first and third officers, and eleven members of the crew, all being in good health. The second boat, containing the captain and second officer, and ten of the crew, is still adrift. The boats parted company during Monday night.
