INVERCARGILL. August 25. The first hockey match Auckland v. Southland was played here to-day and resulted in a win for Auckland by 2 to 1. The ground was somewhat- heavy and this interfered with the more dashing style of the visiting team. The Aucklanders gave an exposition of hockey of a standard never before seen .in "inverearsill, their exceptionally clever stick work being particularIv admired. Southland nut up a stubborn fight and made, the game very fast. Their plav in the field was effective, but within the circle ability was sadly lacking and they consequently failed to improve opportunities which their more knowing opponents would have converted infoj scores. Some say that the jjcore was really three to one, and that the referee was deceived hv reason of a hole in the net wliich allowed the ball to go through.
