THE THRESHING INDUSTRY
A FARMERS UNION THRREOX. ' A very enthusiastic meeting of the Pleasant Point farmers Imon, was> held in Mr Byrnes' Hotel on -Honda} last. The'room was comfortably liik-u "with farmers from tne surrounding'uistrict. Mr Andrew Cleland ' occupied the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, also some private correspondence dealt witji. The chairman brought forward the proposed schedule of the Wainiate Industrial Union of Workers, for award of the Arbitration Court, between tlu above-named Union, and the South Canterbury Threshing Mill Owners' Union. The (schedule comprised sixteenclauses, and every one of these was discussed by the members of the meeting, especially clause 4 which proposes to do away with all stook thresning. The opinion of nearly all present at this meeting was that stook threshing was a necessity under some circumstances, and that it would be inadvisable to agree to dispense with it. Mr J. '.Morris proposed "That this meeting condemns the schedule and that we oppose any award being made.' Seconded by Mr Maze, and carried unanimously. Mr Shepherd proposed that the Farmers' Union give support to the Threshing Mill Owners' I'nion, which was seconded by Mr Garrick. The secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the Mill Owners' Union, and obtain the views of his Union in respect to the schedule; also to arrange an interview between their president, and - the president of this Union, pending a meeting of farmers being called at an early date in Timaru, . Mr Cleland brought forward a copy of the eighth annual Dominion conference of the A'e\j- Zealand Farmers' Union, which was held in July last at "Wellington: ' As previous discussions had occupied much of the meeting's time, it was' decided to leave this matter for discussion to a future meeting, but comments were made by many present, expressing admiration for the work done at this conference by the various representatives. A vote of thanks to Mr Byrnes for the use of his room, and the customary vote of thanks to the chairman clos<fl the meeting.
