Air G. V. Cochrane, clerk to the Waimate County Council, is at.present confined to his bed through -illness, and the minutes of yesterday's Council meeting were taken by Mr Crawshaw. Captain G. F. Day, one of the pioneers of Wellington and of Canterbury, after whom "Day's Bay," Wellington is named, and who settled at Sumner before the "first four ships" -arrived at Port Cooper, died in Christchurch on Tuesday, aged 82. He was skipper of the first vessel to cross the Sumner bar. ■ A London letter in the "Press"-men-tions Mr and Mife Edgar Jones, of Mount Nessing. They were then July 16th, leaving London for a- motor tour through England and Scotland, where Mr Jones intended to have some grouse shooting. They think of leaving for New Zealand about tlic end of the year. The Hon. J. Carroll, '' ActingPremier. returned to Wellington- from the north last night, and will . remain till the session commences; ' ' The Cabinet will soon fix the actual date. Information has been received -by Mr H. Allison that liis son, Mr/H. K. Allison, has obtained the degree of D.D.S. of Philadelphia University, and had also pa,ssed the State examination. Mr Allison, who lias gone- to England to obtain the English'degree, has succeeded in maintaining second place throughout his examination at the Philadelphia University. - Mr AlKson was at one time a resident of Tiniaru.
