At the annual meeting of the }Yaimate Ladies' .Benevolent Society the annual report shwed that tiie committee bad lield five meetings during tiie year. Grants of firing and food had .been niudo to 23 persons, and Christmas gifts of food to ten. The report also referred to the absence tlirough illuess during a part of the year of the secretary and treasuer, Jlesdames Gibson and .franklin, and votes of sympathy in this connection liad been passed. "Ofiicers for the coming year were elected as follows: —President, Airs Studholme; Vice-President, Airs Afclvenzie Gibson; Treasurer, Airs Franklin; Secretary, Airs AlcKenzie Gibson: Assistant-Secretary, Airs J. "W. Alancliester. A benefit football match is to be held on the show ground next Thursday betwsen the team which played against North Otago last Thursday, and a selected team. The match in itself should draw, a crowd, and as the beiifit is for Air H. AYilliams—who some time back met with a serious accident on the railway and who was always a popular "sport" in the district—the success of the undertaking should be assured—a good game and a good object.

A meeting of the "Waimate Ploughing Match Association was held on Saturday afternoon, Mr "W. Chiverton presiding over a good attendance. It was decided to hold the match in Mr J. Manchester's paddock. Judges of ploughing are to be Mr J. MeConochie of Mosgiel, and Mr J. Patterson of Seadown. In case one of these cannot accept Mr C. "Whyte of Paoakaio to be asked. Judges of horses and harness, Mr J. Miller of "Weston. Arrangements for catering were left to the president and secretary. Some days back at a meeting of the "Waimate School Committee the question of an account from C. Begg and Co. was considered, and as reported in our columns, the members of the committee who were said to have signed a bailment repudiated all knowledge of this. The bailment itself is now in the Land.* of tin secretary of the school coninu'tt'ee, and apparently bears the signatures of these gentlemen. We mention this in justice to C. Begg and Co. The matter will probably come up at next meeting of committee. The annual meeting of shareholders in the "Waimate Gas and Coal Company Ltd., was hold in the Borough Chambers on Friday . night. Mr J. Manchester presided and there were about twenty present. The report and bal-ance-sheet, which were adopted, showed that 3,587,324 cubic feet of gas had been sold, an increase of 17 per cent. ou the previous year. There were 2-10 consumers' meters in use, and G3 street lamps. The profits, including £135 _4s 8d brought forward, were £641 is 3d, from which a dividend at the rate oi 7 per cent, was recommended, the balance to be carried forward. Messrs J. Manchester and E. Hassall, the retiring directors, were re-elected. Mr G. A . Cochrane was appointed auditor, at a remuneration of seven guineas. On the motion of Messrs Nicol and Harris the sum of fiftv pounds was voted as directors' fees. Votes of thanks to the directors and staff for their services during the year concluded the meeting.
