CARICATURISTS VISION.
Sir F. Carruthers Gould presided on June 13th at Whiteficld Tabernacle "Men's Meeting, London, the lessons were read by Air Hamar Greenwood. ALP., and the address was delivered by Air J. A. Alacdonald, managing editor of the •' Toronto Globe."
Air Alacdonald was the delegate to the Imperial Press Conference who secured tnc abandonment by the Conference of the resolution in favour of the "systematic and uuiversal training of the'niale population" of the self- ' governing dominions. It was clear that the congregation at AYlu'tclields had not forgotten the incident, for they rose- to then- feet and cheered Air Alacdonald again and again when he stood forward to address them. In his capacity as chairman, Sir FCarruthers Gould made a delightful speech, whimsical yet earnest, humorous yet full of a deep seriousness. " \Ye have had visions lately,*' he said, "and I had a vision the other night. 1 dreamt I was on Plymouth Hoc- Frankie Drake, and Raleigh, and the whole of the old were there, playing a game of bowls, and the news "was brought that a Spanish Armada was coming up the Channel. Drake stopped the game of bowls, found out how many ships he had, borrowed a pencil, or the Elizabethan equivalent of a pencil, from Raleigh, multiplied the number by two, and with considerable difficulty added 10 per cent, margin. Then l.c turned «o Raleigh, and, in his broad Devonshire vernacular, said: —"Us can't light 'em; us hain't two to one.' "' This delightful sally was iimiicn-cly appreciated. and when the laughter had
died awayi Sir Frank proceeded: "Then I woke, and I remembered that Drake finished tho game of bowls, took his fleet out to sea, got to windward of the Spaniards, and whacked them. I wish we had some of that spirit nowadays. If some of our friends from overseas had come a little earlier, they might have thought John Bull was a doddering old imbecile, but be is a little better now, and I am sure if all you here could have been at the naval review yesterday you would have said that 'Arniagcddons were cheap. 1 "
