Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, ;August 5. At the Police Court Daiiiol Kyan, a butcher, was fined\£2 and costs for having cruelly ill-treated- live pigs by splitting their ears.,. Mr Cutter., S.M., said that forty-five butchers sent thenpigs to the abattoirs, and defendant was the only one who found it necessary to adopt'ear-splitting as a method of 'identification. He was of opinion that defendant acted cruelly, though perhaps •unintentionally J ; ';•• ■'- Another batch of.immigrants totalling 140 arrived fropi England by; the Devon late last night. Fprty-eight of the number are for, Auckland, .15 for Wellington and 25, for Port Chalmers. The new arrivals are chiefly tradesmen, with a few farm .and, domestic servants.
