LONDON, August 5
Renter's and other correspondents report fierce fighting on July 25th, between the gendarmes, police, and revolutionists outside Barcelona. The Marist monastery offered a stout resistance, and three monks wei-e shot. The mob. destroyed five churches and convents in a few hours. During the night Barcelona- was given over to t]ie horrors of the -revolution. There was no. gas or electricity.in the streets, and gangs of incendiaries, iheluding-women, carried torches,.'bundles'of straw, paper,' hatchets and jwtrolo.ura, . rushed from" church to church, and convent to convent. The-, next afternoon the mob sar-ke.l a number of goldsmiths' shops. The lathers and pupils of the Jesuit monastery at Sarin expelled the rioters for three days by a steady rifle fire, until the artillery relieved them. -.
After burningthe ■convent of Ran Joronimo the revolutionistsdisinterred the corpses and carried "them in procession, tied ropes to the embalmed' bodies of .nuns and dragged'them through the streets. ■'
There are now , 25,000 soldiers in Barcelona.
