THE RETRENCHMENT SCHEME.
To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald.'" Sir,—We read, also hear, a great deal about Sir Joseph Ward's retrenchment scheme. Might 1 beg a small space to air an opinion on the subject? Well, 1 consider that if Sir Joseph wishes to, retrench he should begin on his own salary and those of his Cabinet Ministers, and iu any case it would only be a fair thing for them to pay their own railway fares, for who are in a better position to do so than thev? Were they to do so 1 fancy we should not hear of them running here there and everywhere on the railways, ostensibly "to learn the requirements of the people," in reality taking pleasore trips with their families at the expense of the country. No* the people would have to go to them first if thev wanted anvtbing.—l am, etc., THOMAS O'BRIEN, Pleasant Point.
