Play was therefore postponed till to-morrow. A DRAWN GAME. Received 5 p.m., July 18th. LONDON, July 17. , The return, match against Surrey was drawn. Rain fell overnight, and the weather this morning when play was resumed was cloudy. As the wicket was soft the start was delayed for a quarter of an hour. Harrison was dismissed after adding a single to his overnight score- —4 for 100. The century was reached after 115 minutes' play. Goatley gave an excellent display, the fifth wicket falling for 145. Hitch followed, hut Carter snapped him up at the wicket without any addition to the score. Hayward lasted 195 minutes, and played fine, all round cricket. He hit five fours, and gave a hot chance to Laver off his own. bowling when 71. —7 for 166. The eighth and ninth wickets fell at 171. Smith went for fearless hitting after lunch, and put on 26 in ,15 minutes. Carter did splendid work behind the stumps. The Australians' second innings was chiefly remarkable for Smith's ' fine bowling. The Ransford-Armstrong partnership lasted 80 minutes, and put on 73 runs. The first wicket went at 14, the second at 23, and the third at 96. Ransford' gave an excellent display, and batted for 95 minutes, and Armstrong showed sound defence. —4 for 115. The fifth and sixth wickets fell at 126. 'The Australians then declared the innings closed. Hayes and Goatley were Surrey's first pair, and played out time.
