STRONG WINE.
THE LAW DEFECTIVE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 17. At Tekuiti on Thursday, A. A. Lissamann was charged with selling liquor containing 31.03 per cent. of proof spirit, known us -'Molouva portwiue." A constable purchased a bottle for 4s, and the contents were analysed by the public analyst, and upon, his report a charge was laid that the wine was ten times stronger than ordinary ale, and half the maximum strength of brandy. The defendant had sold twelve cases in a very short time. The . Magistrate found defendant guilty of a breach of section 273 of the Licensing Act, but in view of the circumstances of the case, the defendant's bona fides, and tthe anomaly in the law in respect of the sale of medicinal wine in Maori districts, be dismissed the charge, on defendant paying £8 2s Od costs. It was suggested that the anomaly in .section 273 as affecting the Maori districts should be brought under tb" notice nf the AttorneyGeneral.
