COUNCIL AND COMPANY.
A COMPLICATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 17. The negotiations between the City Council, and the gas company for the sale to the company for a term of years, of the. right to bring the gas v mains from Miramar through the City streets have reached that stage where the Council demands the payment of £-500 per annum for the privilege, and the company offers £250. Matters are now complicated ■■ through an attempt being made by the gas company to secure the issue of ' an Order-in-Council authorising the work under" a private- Bill of 1908, which ,was believed to safeguard the Council's rights in such cases as this one. A proviso was inserted by arrangement between Sir Joseph Ward and Mr Hislop, the late Mayor, and .it was understood that no order would ever be issued while any negotiations were incomplete, but the acting-Pre-mier, Hon. J. Carroll, has said he will not delay the issue later than Monday. , nnless stronger reasons are submitted than any given so far. The Town Clerk has forwarded a Jong and strongly written letters stating the- Council's position and views, nnd Monday's issue is being eagerly awaited as the proposal involves an - Important and far reaching principle.
