AMUSEMENTS.
—♦ SHERWOOD'S PICTURES. There was a fair' house at the Theatre Royal last night when Professor Sherwood reopened his pictoral entertainment with a new and excellent programme. It is a curious thing that tha public of Timaru will flock to sec the shows of travelling bioscope companies, and yet accord such meagre support to the permanent picture show in the theatre, which in every way equals the faro provided by visiting combinations and in some ways considerably excels them. Perhaps it is the old story of a prophet never having honour in his own country, and the old-time 'mana' of the names of certain proprietors of well-known biograph siiows still continues to exercise a glamour that seems irresistible. Be that as it may Sherwood's pictures, especially this latest programme is well worth seeing, for the films are full- of interest and clearly produced. Among the instructive subjects as a grand picture of the review of German troops before the Kaiser and another which shows the "sabot" making industry in Brittany. The star dramatic film was entitled "Redeemed from ' Sin" in which is enacted a very powerful story which must be seen to be appreciated. "A tale of a harem" is a novel idea well worked out. '/The Rose and the Butterfly" and "A Roman Idyll" are two beautifully coloured productions of the highest quality artistically, whilst the views of fashionable Paris and parisiennes will afford considerable pleasure to the fair sex. The comics fe a well selected and amusing lot, which well relieve the more serious part of the entertainment.
