The Scottish Miners' Federation have appealed to tho Miners' Federation of Britain to ballot for a proposal for a general stoppage of work. The colliery disputes in Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire have been settled.
SHORT-LIVED STRIKE.
SYDNEY, July 13. A municipal strike has occurred at Broken Hill through the Mayor displacing eight single men to make way for a similar number of unemployed married men. The Municipal Employees' Association ordered a strike, 'tli the result that all civil services, including tho electric lighting-were sns, pended. The Mayor then reversed liis action, and work was resumed.

rp. . CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. IJie following award lias been made by the Arbitration Court in the rattan and wicker-workers' dispute. The hours of work shall bo 44 per week; overtime shall be naid for at the rate of time and a Quarter for the first three hours and time and a half afterwards and double time for work done on Sundays. The minimum wago shall bo Is 2d per hour; all piecework find the bonus system shall be prohibited. Ao employee shall be a contractor whilst working for an employer. All work shall be performed in the factory of the employer. An industrial agreement in the dispute between the operative stonemasons' union and the employers' union has been filed as an award which will remain in force until July, 191 j. Tho principal conditions of the award are — hours of work, forty-four hours per week. Minimum wages of journeymen Is Gd per hour, overtime time and a quarter for the first four hours and time and a half afterwards, and on holidays and double time after 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Under rate permits are provided for and the preference clause provides that an employer if called on to do so by the union shall 'dismiss any | worker who within seven days of lii.s employment does not. join the union. The award prohibits piece-work. OAMARU, July 13. J. E. Brown was fined 10s and costs for a breach of the Otago award of the saddlers' harness and collar makers' award, in that lie. employed a nuin for journeymen's work :it less than the wages fixed by the award. The offence was admitted, defendant stating that he had attempted to obtain a journeyman from Duiiedin and Christchnrcli. The man employed was an unfinished apprentice, and received a
higher wage than ho would have otherwise received at this stage of iiis training. it was pointed out to defendant that application should have been made for a permit to employ a man at under the rate.
