WORK FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.
The Mayor of Dunedin, the Hon. J. T. Paul, M .L.C.j Mr J. F. [Arnold, M.P., and Mr J. Brown, President of the Trades and Labour Council, have published :m appeal to the citizens of Dunedin, which strikes us as much more sensible than any demand upon or any appeal to the Government or to local bodies, for assistance to the unemployed. It is an appeal to individual citizens, Jiot for money to buy food for the workless and their families, but for ftfiut
f the workless want to occupy them — cmlil jobs. The appeal says: —"There must be hundreds of odd jobs which should bo done. Householders ( ' :l " c^° Iwo desirable and commendable things :it ouee now —put their houses or grounds in order, and also make life easier for their fellow men, not forgetting women and little children. . . . We feel that if citizens will immediately put in hand the work that wants doing —indeed in some eases it is intended to have ifc done —now, if local bodies will do their part, and with the co-operation of the Government. tliis terrible spectre . . can he allayed."
