A COLONIAL ABROAD.
DR CHAI'PLE IN PARIS. Writing from London on April 22 to » friend in Lawrence, Dr Cliaonle, exM.P says: "We arrived safely in the Great City three days ago, after spending three months 011 the way—six weeks 011 the water, a month in Paris, and a fortnight in Eastbourne. 1 have been a man from Cook's to my girls, and have been showing them round, guide-book or history in hand. When we were in Paris the agricultural show was on, and we attended it 011 two oc-i-ision. -Their prize beef was too heavy. Prize bullocks' were often four yearold and over, and were so fat that their contour was deformed with tuberosities of fat. These animals were so heavy 011 their feet that they walked as gingerly as if they had corns and tight boots on newly-metalled roads. They had been feed on 'forced food' diet, oil cake, mashed corn, etc. This taught nothing, as to the principles. I have so often preached of early maturity and economical raising—i.e., maximum result in minimum time at minimum cost —were apparently ignored. The favourite sheep were Southdowns tails out off at' the root and bodies clipped by machine, all except a round patch the size of a. hand 011 one shoulder to show the length and duality of the wool.—This is rational. The points of sheep and wool are both obvious to the judges, and little scope for toilette disguise.' The manager of the Angers rope, twine, and cordage works, whom I inter\*iewed ; in Paris, had samples of New Zealand binder twine in the show. He said the farmers preferred New Zealand fibre twine on account of its being easier 011 the reaping machines, and manufacturers preferred it also on account of being more pliable to manufacture.
