WAIMATE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. Tlie usual mooting of the Waimate Borough Council was held on Tuesday night. J'resent: The .Mayor (..Mr N. Francis), Councillors Hunt, Sanders, •Jones, Hutt, lnkster," Cox, .Miller and Collett. The Minister of Tourist Department wrote in reply to the Council's invitation to visit \\ ainiate, expressing his hope to do so at a later date. The Hon. R. McNab wrote that as lie was leaving for England he could not accept the Council's invitation to address a public meeting at Waimate 011 universal military training. He hoped if the question was to the front 011 his return to reopen the correspondence. A subsidy of was voted to the Waimate Technical Classes Association. A discussion took place in this connection as to the value of these classes, some Councilors contending that in a district like this, subjects connected with the land should form the bulk of the teaching. Others thought the subjects being taught were attracting the rising generation anil were to that extent 011 right lines; that the classes tif-n' fairly right in subjects, but better i|u:<litied instructors than last year's 1. .-it- desirable ; that fanning subjects v.oincf not be teachable at a class in school, practical training on the land v,as necessary; iliat .something was wanting, as take shorthand for injtance, no certificate had been secured by any pupil, that possibly it kept yonng people employed in the evenings, and aiiswerd a good purpose in that way. Mr John Foley asked for a water supply on rights formerly waived in connection with the waterworks scheme. —Referred to Water Committee,
The Municipal Association forwarded a book of opinions 011 municipal and kindred subjects. Applications for carter's licenses were granted. 'The Finance Committee reported that "after carefully considering the question of superannuation, we are of opinion that on account of the small number of nmpleyees, it would be quite impossible for this Council to start a fund, as provided for by the Act: of 1908. Should the Municipal Association at any future time successfully inaugurate a "joint superannuation fund" this Council might give any request to join the same, favourable consideration."- —The Mayor explained the position regarding this fund and the report was adopted. It was decided to have the beating of the Council Chamber made more effective by putting in two extra heaters. A notice of motion that the bank overdraft be £ISOO be rescinded was carried to make way for a motion for increase to £2OOO, which was also carried.
A matter of "breach of etiquette" on the part| of a newspaper in reporting matters taken in committee was brought up by Councilor Manchester, who thought an assurance should be given that the matter will not occur again, and an explanation should be made. All explanation was given *by the represntative of the paper in question, and it was understood that the matter would not occur again, the position being now made clear from the by-laws. Accounts for £66 13s 7d were passed for payment.
