OCEAN GREYHOUNDS.
A great race across the Atlantic finished un May Ist at Plyiunutli. Seven ocean greyhounds engaged in the contest. The vessels left NewYork on Saturday, April 24th, between 9 and 11 o'clock in the morning, for Europe; This was a record departure in one day—even for New York. The competitors were : —Xew York (American Line), Kaiserin Auguste T ictoria (Hamburg-American line), Lapland (Red Star), Carinania (Ctinnrd), Baltic (White Star), Minneapolis (Atlantic. Transport), Konig Albert (North German Lloyd). Over 2000 first-class passengers were carried by the steamers. The Baltic and Minneapolis led the way out of New York harbour, whilst an hour later came the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, Carmania, and New York, the other two bringing up the rear at 11 o'clock.
The two first named, with the Konig Albert,_drqpped out of the race on the first day, but the others were well matched,- and excitement was maintained to the finislij the passengers betting on the result, many wagers being made with others on the rival ships by means of wireless telegraphy. With the exception of one day in mid-ocean, vhen there was a south-easterly gale, the weather was remarkably fine, the sea being, smooth and calm. Between the Lapland. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria and New York there was an exciting finish, but honours rested with the New Y'ork, which rea-.-hed Plymouth three hours ahead of a lit German boat. i'or four, days the three vessels were practically continuously in sight. ': lie I apland. passed Plymouth about thi-f? hours after the Kaiserin Angus"" \ -V----toria. whilst the Car I mania precede 1 tl.e Baltic to Queenstown.
