Two young men named Maze r.nd Horgan were charged with illegally trespassing On tlie Unll Siied premises ou the night of 24th .May. during the holding ot lhe volunteer l>;i 11. It appears that tlie accused effected an entrance to the function by a back door entrance used by the attendants who were providing the supper and when accosted by the captain of the company stated they had paid. This, it was afterwards found ivas untrue; they were again warned to leave, and refusing to do so were put out by tlie police. The Gazette regulations were put in by the police showing that tho grounds and premises were vested in trustees for their exclusive use. Edwin Taylor Chapman, Captain of tho Temuka Rifles, and one of the trustees gave evidence in proof of the offence and stated that complaints were frequent about young men beating the doorkeepers and effecting entrance to functions being held, by improper means. The two defendants were warned three times to leave the premises, but refused. He did not desire to he hard on the two accused, but tlie matter was becoming so bad that the officers of the corps were compelled to take steps to punish offenders. Constable Gillespie mentioned that what was desired was to let these young fellows know that unless they are in possession of tickets of admission to the premises they are not to trespass on the grounds and cause a nuisance. Complaints were frequent. The accused pleaded guilty and the Bench in imposing a fine of 5s each and costs 7s, warned them and others that they were liable to a fine of £lO. or three" months' imprisonment.
